EMDR Trauma therapy

TRAUMA

Disappointment and harm belong to life. But sometimes your events are so significant that you no longer seem to come out alone or with help from family and / or friends. Then there is a trauma. You’ll always wonder if it’s ever going to be okay.

Assistance in trauma treatment can be divided into two phases: initially we process in various stages. Read more about the stages of trauma treatment; In addition, the increasingly acclaimed methodology EMDR is used if the trauma is not processed in a natural way.

EMDR & TRAUMA PROCESSING

EMDR is a relatively new, short-term therapy for processing nasty events. A lot of scientific research has been done and it is applied worldwide to regular healthcare. It is sometimes called the “wonder therapy”.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing * and ensures that the emotional load associated with shocking / traumatic experience reduces or even disappears. • In traumas can you think of (sexual) abuse, neglect, bullying, rape, divorce, disasters, war situations, burglary violence, (seeing) a “robbery, illness, long-term hospitalization,” an operation or loss Of a dear one.
Some events have had such an impact that the brain is unable to process them. ?? Shocking events that persist, including fearful images (reverences, flashbacks), avoidance, shaking and nightmares are often characteristic of unprocessed trauma. Thus, mental and / or physical complaints develop.

FOR WHO IS EMDR THERAPY?

EMDR can be applied to anyone suffering from, inter alia, no “no”, fear, sleep problems, concentration problems, depression, addiction, chronic pain, anger attacks, stress, burnout, relationship problems, attachment problems, or negative self-esteem.
Sometimes the cause of this is a clearly traumatic event.

Examples of major events are:
Problematic youth experiences
Long-term arguments and conflicts
Burn out
Death of a dear one
Separation
Victims of bullying (school / workplace)
Victim or witness of abuse / serious violent crime, (seeing) pointless violence
Occupationally related (including police, fire department, ambulance staff) hazardous and / or shocking circumstances or calamities
Witness or victim of domestic violence
(Armed) robbery
Victim or witness of a criminal offense: assault, rape, pedophilia, incest
Severe / prolonged illness / hospitalization / surgery
Traffic accidents (resulting in chronic pain)
War experiences (including from soldiers / veterans)
Natural disasters (earthquakes, storms, fires)
Train, marine airplane accidents / disasters
But events that you do not remember now or that you do not recognize as traumatically can hinder you to live your life completely.

HOW WORKS EMDR?

There are several ways to perform an EMDR session. That can be done with eye movements or with sounds. The left-right movement causes stimulation of the brain. This makes it easier for you to find memories. It is stored again in the brain, but now with less emotional load. EMDR therapy will cause nasty memories to lose her powers and emotional loads.
EMDR often works very quickly and effectively, making it often seen as a very intensive therapy. In people who have experienced long-term trauma and more complex issues, treatment will take longer.

METHOD

I will ask you to reflect on the nasty event (s), including the accompanying images, thoughts and feelings. First, this happens by gathering more information about the traumatic experience. Then the session begins. I will ask you to reconsider the event, but now this is done in combination with a distracting stimulus: this is my finger moving from left to right, your eyes follow my finger while returning to memory. • Several rounds are being done. After every round we take some rest. I will always ask you what comes up in your minds / associations. The EMDR session usually starts a stream of thoughts and images, but sometimes also feelings and physical sensations. Your experience can change quickly. After each round you concentrate on the most striking change after which a new round follows.
In a next session we will look at how you feel right now. What is the change that occurred between the negative pattern you were in for treatment and how is it now?

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED EFFECTS OF EMDR?

You may be excited in the first few days, a lot of dreams or feeling tired. Due to the new images and feelings that have come up, you can even feel the loss of control. This whole process usually does not last longer than three days. The processing process is ongoing, brightness has been obtained and after a few days you will feel better.

HOW DO I KNOW IF EMDR IS SOMETHING FOR ME?

Prior to the EMDR sessions, an intake interview takes place. The complaints, causes and backgrounds are being investigated. I also look at your personal situation so that we can properly assess whether EMDR is suitable for you.
Personally, I recommend you to follow therapy or coaching next to EMDR.

* Literally translated means: by making eye movement less sensitive and reprocessing.

The most annoying experiences in our lives we process independently. For example, by dreaming.
However, some events have had such an impact that the brain is unable to process them.
Your body will then give signals of insecurity, knowing that is not necessary.
You can then be tense and anxious, overweight, sleepily and hard to relax. Also, reverences and nightmares or panic attacks may occur.
